Information Management
Goal
The Department of Information Management was formally
established in 1991. Our goal is to equip graduates with theoretical and
practical knowledge of information technology and management science,
preparing them for the real world.
Teaching and Research
The Department currently has a full-time academic staff
of 14 who are supported by 30 equivalent full-time tutors. All of the
Department's academic staffs hold PhDs, including 1 professor, 4
associate professors, 9 assistant professors, and 6 more to join the
Department shortly. The School's teaching and research endeavors are
clustered into the following four main discipline areas:
• intelligent information systems
• electronic commerce
• mobile computing and multimedia
• digital learning
Other areas of staff expertise include: telecommunication, management
information systems, financial and portfolio management, information and
society, logistic management.
Curriculum and Facility
The Department is large and diverse covering all the
major subject areas in the discipline. The school is responsible for
over 1,200 students including around 120 graduate coursework students
and 6 PhD students.
The Department offers three undergraduate coursework programs:
• 4-year Bachelor of Information Management ¡V Regular Program
(147 credit points)
• 4-year Bachelor of Information Management ¡V Evening Program
(130 credit points)
• 2-year Bachelor of Information Management ¡V Polytechnic
Program (75 credit points)
The Department offers 2 graduate coursework programs:
• Master of Information Management ¡V Regular Program (37
credit points)
• Master of Information Management ¡V Evening Program (30
credit points)
The Department, joined with the Department of Information Engineering,
also offers PhD program. The PhD must be completed in not less than six
years, including 30 credit points by coursework.
The curriculum has been designed to integrate disciplines of information
technology, management of information systems, and management decision
analysis. Diversified courses in the Department are classified into
areas of (1) mathematics and quantitative methods, (2) information
technology and theory, (3) management technology and theory, and (4)
information management and application. Dual degree, minor degree, and
secondary school teaching qualification program are optional.
The Department has three student computer labs including Multimedia Lab,
Intelligent Information Systems Lab, and Electronic Commerce Lab. Other
resources include 7 computer classrooms, campus computer networks, and
dormitory computer networks. The Department is also strongly committed
to faculty and student research activities. Many research results have
been published and awarded in different occasions.
Career Development
Our focus on research means that the latest thinking is
integrated into our educational programs and courses. We pride ourselves
on offering courses that are relevant and those that add value to a
student¡¦s degree. The close association with business and industry
substantially assists our students in networking and enhances their
career prospects.
Our graduates have been well-recognized by both the industry and the
academia. Industrial careers include, but not limited to, programmers,
database managers, network managers, system analysts, project managers,
system managers, consultants, sales and marketing specialists, and
entrepreneurs. Areas of further academic research include, but not
limited to, information management, information engineering, media
communication technology, business administration, education of
informatics, industrial management.
