Industrial Engineering and Management
Introduction
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management,
established in 1990, has enrolled more than 800 undergraduate students.
The department has provided a master program in 1999, and PhD program in 2004. The students in the graduate school are expected to
be familiar with major areas in both industrial engineering and
technology management. The focus is to educate students to lead and
communicate with people, to analyze and solve practice problems, to
improve the efficiency and competitiveness of an organization.
Teaching and Research
The faculty of the Department consists of six
professors, eight associate professors and seven assistant professors. We offer a wide range of courses which emphasize
theories as well as applications. Junior and senior students are
required to participate in a 16-month-long project led by a faculty
member with their own choices. Most faculty members receive research
grants and awards from National Science Council or other organizations.
The Department has held the annual Conference on Technology and
Applications of Quality and Management since 1993, with the support from
various industrial corporations in southern Taiwan. The faculty members
also contribute constantly to the local industry in the manners of
consulting services, professional seminars, and extension courses on
various topics.
Curriculum and Facility
The Department expects students to specialize in at
least one of the following areas: manufacturing and quality control,
production and operations management, information and automation,
finance and economics, organization and human resource management, and
human factors engineering. The teaching and research facilities include
Production and Operations Management Laboratory, Simulation and
Statistical Analysis Laboratory, Intellectual Manufacturing System
Laboratory, Systems Automation Laboratory, Computer Network Laboratory,
Distribution and Warehousing Laboratory, Ergonomics Laboratory and
multimedia presentation classroom. The entire department network has
been built since 1996 and the Precision Quality Control Laboratory has
been established in 1999.
Career Development
The Department will continue to play an active role in
research and development in CAD/CAM, quality engineering and management,
production and information control, logistics, human resource management
and human factors. Some graduates continue to seek advanced degrees
abroad and in domestic institutes. Students who decide to enter the job
market may find numerous available positions in all kinds of
manufacturing and service industries such as computer, electronic,
steel, and insurance companies. Most jobs are related to production
control, quality improvement, and corporate administration. It is a
belief and commitment that every student can acquire innovative
professional training to meet the demands for the industrial development
of Taiwan.
