Chemical Engineering
Introduction
The department was instituted at the
same time as ISU was established in 1990. Currently, the department has
a student body of 400 and admits 120 freshmen each year. Based on the
principles and practices of chemistry, chemical engineering is a
discipline through which the materials vital for human life are
quantitatively produced in the most economical and safe fashion.
Along with the development of modern technologies, the field
of chemical engineering has become increasingly broader than ever
before. Chemical engineers are constantly confronted with the tasks of
not only improving the human life using ever-lasting innovation
technologies, but also cleaning and protecting the environment from
being polluted using their expertise. In order to face the challenges of
ever-growing strictness of laws and regulations, the education of
chemical engineering has become faceted and has progressively improved
as time goes by.
Teaching and Research
In line with the requirements of the
modern life, the department has integrated applied chemistry, materials
sciences, and biological technologies into its curriculum. Also based on
the idea of a balanced education which combines "principles and
applications" and integrates "instruction and experiments", the
department offers some courses related to the leading-edge technologies
of the chemical engineering such as material sciences and biological
technologies on top of the battery core courses. Students are trained
for future career development with classroom teaching, lab work, and
various field tours to the some factories.
In order to better train the chemical engineering personnel,
the department has a distinguished faculty composed of l chair professor
,4.professors,11 associate professors, 4 assistant professors with
doctoral degree and 1 lecturer. Students are encouraged to join a
research team lead by a faculty member who has expertise in a designated
research area.
Curriculum and Facilities
Other than teaching, faculty members
of the department are also engaged in research in the areas of materials
and techniques of electronic IC packages, chemicals for electronic
applications, supercritical fluid technologies, fermentation
technologies, cell and electro-chemical technologies, and pollution
protection.
The research facilities originally include seven laboratories
designated for unit operation, organic chemistry, sequence control,
instrumental analysis, general chemistry, physical chemistry, and
supercritical fluids. Currently, there are two more laboratories under
construction for biological technologies and IC packing. The department
is equipped with scores of costly instruments and the number is
increasing every year as the department tries to build the best teaching
and research environment to generate top quality chemical engineers.
Career Development
Due to the possibility of a
diversified future career for our graduates the department offers a
sound fundamental training for students which will provide opportunities
for students to become
qualified engineers in chemicals field or in other related fields.
