Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering

Introduction

In line with government policies of economic development, which paints Taiwan as an island of technologies, ISU established in 2002 the Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering Institute. We will try to provide graduate education and to incubate high quality R & D manpower for the high-tech industries especially bio-tech and chemical engineering industries in the local area.

Teaching and Research

We are heading into two directions to develop our graduate program. The first one is biotechnology. Into three phrases of development, we try to build our institute initially on biopharmacy, micro-organism, enzyme engineering, bio-separation and purification, environmental biotechnology, sensor, biomaterial; secondly on genetic engineering, protein production and separation; thirdly on incubation technique of botanical and animal cells for practical application.
The second direction of development for us is the chemical engineering part, which will include several subject matters such as synthesis of new organic materials, development of functional and high quality polymer, fine polymer process, micro electronic polymer material, super-critical fluid application, petrochemical process and catalyst, and environmental catalyst material, nano-technology application.

Curriculum and Facility

The Institute has an established series of core courses for the biotechnology and chemical engineering areas depending on the research interest of each student. In the bio-technology area, molecular biology, advanced bioengineering, bio-tech process, advanced biochemistry are provided. In the chemical engineering part, advanced chemical engineering thermodynamic, advanced reaction kinetics, advanced transport phenomena, advanced physical-chemistry, material chemistry are provided. Meanwhile, other related courses such as materials and techniques of electronic IC packages, chemicals for electronic applications, supercritical fluid technologies, fermentation technologies, cell and electro-chemical technologies, and pollution protection are also offered to meet the needs of our students.
Currently, the Institute has two laboratories for biological technologies and IC packing. Four other laboratories are being constructed to suit for the needs of our faculty members. Other research laboratories belonging to the department of chemical engineering include unit operation, organic chemistry, sequence control, instrumental analysis, general chemistry, physical chemistry, and supercritical fluids.
The Institute is equipped with scores of costly instruments and the number is increasing every year as we are trying to build a superior teaching and research environment to generate top quality R&Dresearcher.

Career Development

Due to fast developing industries in biomaterials, electronic materials, semiconductor, and polymer, R&D manpower in bio-tech and high-tech chemical engineering is in demand.
The Institute offers a fundamental and practical training to develop R&D skills and capabilities. We make it sure that students finishing graduate program at the Institute will have required training to perform professional practice and to build a prosperous career.
