Applied Japanese

Introduction

Inaugurated in 2002, the Department of Applied Japanese aims to train students to be professionals in the Japanese language. It is a department in a well-equipped University. It offers a good opportunity in southern Taiwan for those who are interested in Japanese language. In addition to a good command of the Japanese language, students will learn Japanese culture, and basic knowledge in education, society and mass media, trading, economics, politics, law. The Department
is also planning to offer four-year evening program, starting 2004, for on-job students who have the need to polish and enrich their professional skills.


Teaching and Research

(1)Teaching:
The courses we offer emphasize on the training of four skills-listening, reading, speaking and writing. The promotion of the basic knowledge in Japanese culture, society, economics, trading and technology is also emphasized. The teaching of specialized skills on translation and interpretation will be a third emphasis of the department. On top of language training students are expected to learn how to see things happening in the world from an international perspective. Before graduation students have to pass the Japanese Language Examination.
(2)Research:
The department chair holds the Ph.D. in Literature from Japan, and all faculty members specialize in Japanese related fields. Their research covers Japanese literature, philosophy, sociology, law, economics, linguistics and multimedia teaching. They were active in international conferences, participated in academic seminars or workshops. The Department constantly tries to improve the equipment and environment for research. Hopefully every faculty member will blossom in their interested area of research.


Curriculum and Facilities

(1)Curriculum
A. Professional character: The four skills-listening, reading, speaking and writing-comprise the compulsory professional courses of the Department. Small-class teaching based on both theory and practice is emphasized. As for the reading skills, we place importance on studying methods in order to prepare students to be lifelong independent learners. The focus of writing skills falls on familiarizing students with various forms of writing and the ability of journalistic writing. In addition, translation and interpretation constitute an important role in the compulsory courses. Also, the Department regards computer and multimedia teaching as a Mlfunctional programs necessary emphasis in programs language education in the 21st century.
B. Multifunctional programs: To fit the needs of students entering different professional fields after graduation, the department has designed the following types of study programs for students: Teaching of Japanese Sociology and Japanese Culture, Translation and Interpretation, Multimedia Language Teaching and Applied Japanese. Students can choose programs depending on their interest and specialty, and have
the opportunity to go to Japan for firsthand experiences.
C. International prospect: The target in the future of the department aims for establishing international and multi-dimensional development, and communicating with the academic organizations in other countries. Thus, the department will not only graduate outstanding Japanese specialists in various professional fields for our country and society, but also work toward student exchange programs with
Japanese universities and research institutes.

(2)Facilities
Up to now, our Department has several kinds of videos, tapes and CDs, including Japanese teaching, classical literature, sociology, economics and law, famous movies and languages. In addition, the Department has one multimedia-language lab, several overheard projectors, computers and printers.


Career Development

(1)Graduate studies in Taiwan: Students can consider pursuing their master degree or Ph.D. degree in Taiwan.
(2)Studying abroad: Owing to their good command of the Japanese language and general knowledge of Japanese culture, students are at an advantage when furthering their studies abroad.
(3)Job opportunities: In addition to education or research, professional fields such as industry, commercial trade, mass communication, publication, translation, diplomacy, computer technology and multimedia business are opportunities open to the students.
